Crimsafe Security Screens passed easily!

We tested three types of Crimsafe product: our regular range, our heavy duty range and our commercial range.

Our regular Crimsafe screen withstood up to 500 joules of impact energy in a single impact. That's five times as high as the singular impact level the current Australian Standard requires.

Crimsafe Heavy Duty withstood up to 700 joules of impact energy in a single impact. Seven times higher than the singular impact level that the standard requires.

Our Commercial screen withstood up to 1200 joules of impact energy in a single impact! That's 12 times higher than the singular impact level required by the Australian Standard.

Watch the video below of the original 2009 tests with the sound up and you'll get a good sense of the enormous power delivered by a 1200 joule impact.

Crimsafe Care Guide

All meshes act as a filter, trapping airborne dirt and impurities. A regular wash down with warm soapy water using a sponge or a bristled brush (approximately every 4-6 weeks) followed by a clean water rinse, will keep your Crimsafe screens in good condition.

For high salt areas particular care should by taken, as salt will stick to most surfaces, attracting moisture and other airborne impurities. If not kept in check this can cause staining of the mesh, ranging from white salt marks, to red iron oxide marks (common airborne impurities) and deterioration of the frames.

Crimsafe will not rust. However, staining caused by a combination of salt, moisture and impurities may result in ‘reddish’ marks if not kept clean. Ultimately, if no maintenance is done, deterioration, particularly in high salt and moisture environments, may result in a breakdown of the product to a corrosive level.

In harsh salt/moisture environments, the Crimsafe wire can be protected easily after cleaning with a periodic application of silicone (CRC 808 is recommended) by simply spraying onto a cloth and wiping the surface of the wire.

If you find that marks cannot be removed with the standard cleaning methods, a solution of Phosphoric Acid diluted and used strictly as directed, will remove any stubborn marks.

An example, available from hardware stores, is ‘Plus’ rust converter.

Although the screen itself does not rust, this form of phosphoric acid will remove any metal based contaminants such as iron oxide, as well as salt stains.

NB: Care must be taken not to allow phosphoric acid to touch anodising framing as it may stain anodised surfaces. Again, be sure to follow safety instructions. After a rinse, a quick silicon spray will bring them back to new condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

01: Crimsafe Mesh

Frequently Asked Questions - Crimsafe® Mesh

1.1 What's special about the paint on Crimsafe mesh?

Our "Mesh Black" coating is a special formula we created in conjunction with Dulux that contains additives to actively resist buildup of dirt and impurities and assist in cleaning.

1.2 How big are the holes in the mesh?

Apart from its strength, Crimsafe acts as a very effective flyscreen. The holes are 1.5mm x 1.5mm. The holes in normal flyscreen mesh are 1.5mm x 1.3mm.

1.3 How well can you see through Crimsafe mesh?

It depends on lighting conditions, but in general Crimsafe does not impede your view in any substantial way.

1.4 Is it Pet-proof?

Yes, absolutely. Dogs, cats and birds are unable to penetrate the mesh with their claws and beaks.

1.5 Is Crimsafe fly-proof and mosquito-proof?

Yes, the holes in Crimsafe's Tensile-Tuff Security mesh are just slightly larger than regular flyscreen. Ours measure 1.5mm x 1.5mm, whereas standard flyscreen is 1.3mm x 1.5mm.

1.6 Is Crimsafe sand fly or midge-proof?

No, but it does cut down on the number that will come inside by about 80%. And if you spray a surface insect repellant on your screens you'll increase that percentage substantially.

1.7 Is the mesh available in any other colour besides black?

Generally not. But there's a pretty good reason why. Black absorbs light, and is non-reflective, so when you look through the mesh all you see is light that has come straight through the holes in it, making it much easier to see outside.

If the mesh was any other colour at all, it would reflect that colour both from the inside light, and from those rays of light outside your home that landed on the curved strands of wire and bounced inside. So you would lose a lot of the visibility and find looking through the mesh to be an experience full of glare.

1.8 Does Crimsafe mesh cut down the heat and light of the sun?

Yes it does. Depending on the angle of the sun, Crimsafe acts as a very effective blind whilst still allowing you an excellent view.

Crimsafe also reduces the intensity of the sun's heat. Independent studies show that your Crimsafe screen can cut down on solar heat gain by up to 53%. Using a Crimsafe screen adds to the energy efficiency of your door or window.

1.9 How thick is the wire used in Crimsafe mesh?

Crimsafe uses a 0.9mm diameter 304 grade stainless steel wire. Many other mesh security systems use a 0.8mm diameter 316 grade wire.

Crimsafe Tensile-Tuff® 0.9mm 304 wire, when compared to 0.8mm 316 wire, is 26.5% thicker cross-sectionally, which assists its ability to absorb impact energy better than 0.8mm 316 at high tensile levels.

02: The Strength of Crimsafe

Frequently Asked Questions - The Strength of Crimsafe

2.1 Why is Crimsafe so strong?

It's because Crimsafe is the only security screen product in Australia where the mesh is screwed into the frame and clamped down with a paterned device called the "Screw-Clamp™". Crimsafe hold the patent on the Screw-Clamp technology used in the system, which means no other company can legally offer a copy of the technology.

When hit by an impact like a kick, our system spreads the load around the whole frame and back into structure of the building, meaning Crimsafe can resist enormous impacts. Unlike plastic wedging systems which can only localise the impact, making them relatively easy to kick out compared to Crimsafe.

The mesh is also made out of 0.9mm diameter 304 structural grade wire strands, and woven together in such a tight way that each strand supports the others around it.

2.2 How strong is Crimsafe's Tensile Tuff® Security mesh?

Our Tensile-Tuff security mesh undergoes several hardening processes to make it stronger than ordinary steel of the same diameter. Our mesh is stronger than any of our current competitors' mesh in its class.

2.3 Can Crimsafe Tensile-Tuff security mesh be cut with a knife?

Crimsafe passes the Australian Standard Knife Shear Test, meaning the mesh conforms to the pass rating specified by the standard. However in real life, if you work at something long enough and if you have the right tools, you can cut just about anything.

The point to understand though is that Crimsafe is strong enough to resist attacks from the common cutting implements that burglars carry, for a long, long time - certainly beyond the point where the criminals will give up out of fear of being caught in the act.

2.4 Can I use Domestic grade Crimsafe in a commercial application?

Our recommendation is not to do so. Whilst there is no difference in the strength of the mesh itself, the Crimsafe commercial system features five times the number of screws through the mesh and the frame, and 60% thicker frames to dramatically increase the strength of the system.

Whilst the domestic system is very strong, we had to consider that in most commercial applications, it can be quite isolated and a would-be thief would have a vast amount of undisturbed time to carry out an attack on the screen. We decided that a much stronger screen would give you better protection.

Our commercial system, which was originally designed for prison and detention centre applications, was the perfect choice. The Crimsafe Heavy Duty system can also be used in many commercial applications.

2.5 Do Crimsafe doors need a mid-rail?

Crimsafe doors can be made without a mid-rail, however we always recommend that you get one because it greatly increases the strength of the door and its resistance to jemmying, and aids in visually identifying the presence of the security screen.

(The last thing you want is to try to walk through a Crimsafe door in the middle of the night or brightness of the day - it could be a rude awakening.)

2.6 Can my Crimsafe Sliding Door be pulled off the tracks when locked?

A correctly installed Crimsafe Sliding Door should not be able to be removed from the tracks when locked. Here's why.

Crimsafe Sliding Doors are fitted standard with a triple lock, and heavy duty interlock. When locked, the triple lock will hold the door securely into the door jamb at three points. On the opposite end of the door is where the interlock is located. The interlock on the Crimsafe Door is designed to hook into a corresponding interlock on the glass sliding door securing the Crimsafe door to the glass sliding door making it very secure.

When in the unlocked position, it may be possible with some force to dislodge the door from its tracks. However when closed and locked, you can rest assured knowing your Crimsafe Door is secure.

06: 304 Security Steel and 316 Marine Steel

Frequently Asked Questions - 304 Structural Grade and 316 Marine Grade Steel

4.1 Is Crimsafe made from 304 grade stainless steel or 316 grade stainless steel?

Crimsafe is made from 0.9mm diameter 304 structural grade steel. In security applications 0.9mm diameter 304 structural grade stainless steel can remain stronger AND absorb more energy in an attack situation, than 0.8mm diameter 316 marine grade making it more appropriate for security applications.

You are already familiar with 304 grade steel, though you might not know it. It accounts for more than 50% of all stainless steel produced and finds its way into many, many applications. Your household saucepans, for example, your sink or your cutlery may all be made from 304 grade steel.

304 grade steel has significant strength properties. Beyond cutting your steak, it is used in different types of structures the world over because of its high strength and durability.

In fact 304 grade steel is the most demanded stainless steel in the world because it is a fantastic all-around product.

4.2 What are the differences between 304 structural grade and 316 marine grade stainless steel?

Real technology is complicated to explain. What Crimsafe cares about is keeping uninvited people out of your home.

The most important difference between 304 grade and 316 grade stainless steel as it applies to security screens is the ability of 0.9mm diameter 304 structural grade stainless steel to absorb impact energy better than 0.8mm 316 marine grade at high tensile levels.

The actual strength of the stainless steel, while very important, is not the most influential factor in creating an effective security screen. The measure of how much energy absorption can be obtained on the way to tensile strength is far more important.

Explained simply - By using 0.9mm 304 structural grade stainless steel, Crimsafe security screens are engineered to remain strong when deformed by the impact of an attack and not become brittle and give way.

07: Cleaning Crimsafe

Frequently Asked Questions - Cleaning Crimsafe

5.1 Why do I need to clean Crimsafe®?

Crimsafe Tensile-Tuff® mesh acts similarly to an air conditioner filter or a pool filter, in that it traps dirt and impurities and requires cleaning on a regular basis.

Read "How do I clean Crimsafe?" below.

5.2 How do I clean Crimsafe?

Regular maintenance involves a wash down of frames and mesh with Crimsafe Wash and Wax in warm water using a soft bristle brush, followed by a clean water rinse. You should clean your Crimsafe screens in accordance with this guide.

5.3 Why Crimsafe Won't Rust?

Crimsafe® mesh is made from 304 Grade Stainless Steel which on its own has a lifespan of approximately 65 years. High grade pre-treatment and high durability powder coat technologies are applied to further protect and enhance the finished Crimsafe product.

It is only airborne impurities that build up on the surface of the mesh and frame that may oxidise and change colour. Provided the powder coating remains intact, Crimsafe mesh will not rust.

08: Crimsafe's Fire and Heat Resistant Properties

Frequently Asked Questions - Crimsafe's® Fire and Heat Resistant Properties

6.1 Is Crimsafe Fire-proof and how much heat will it reflect?

Yes, Crimsafe has been tested according to Australian Standards for fire attenuation and is recognised in the Building Code of Australia as a "Deemed to Satisfy" solution for bushfire areas. It will reflect up to 45% of radiant heat.

09: Crimsafe's Emergency Exit Products

Frequently Asked Questions - Crimsafe's® Emergency Exit Products

10: Crimsafe's History

Frequently Asked Questions - Crimsafe's® History

8.1 When did Crimsafe start?

Crimsafe first started manufacturing their screw-clampedTM mesh in March 1996.
